This year, the smog crisis in Lahore has worsened to such an extent that it has been declared the world’s most polluted city.
In response to the escalating health risks, the Punjab government has announced new school timings to protect students. A statement shared by the Punjab Environmental Protection Authority on Wednesday released the revised schedule and safety guidelines.
From October 28 until January 31, 2025, schools will begin at 8:45 AM. Additionally, schools have been ordered to hold no assemblies for students indoors to reduce their exposure to the harmful outdoor air.
Govt Urges Citizens to Take Precautions Against Smog
In addition to the revised school timings, authorities in Punjab have urged citizens to take precautions to minimize exposure to smog.
- Wear masks—Protect yourself from inhaling harmful pollutants by wearing a mask when going outside.
- Limit outdoor activities—Reduce time spent outdoors, especially during peak pollution periods.
- Keep windows and doors closed—Prevent indoor air contamination by minimizing the influx of outdoor air.
To further reduce pollution, the government has banned all fireworks activities until the end of January 2025. This measure aims to prevent the release of additional pollutants into the air.
By implementing these comprehensive measures, the government hopes to improve air quality and protect the health of citizens during the smog season.
Medical Professionals Advise Caution for Individuals with Respiratory Conditions
As per the latest IQAir data, Lahore’s air quality dropped to 503 on the US AQI, which is “hazardous” to citizens’ health.
Doctors are urging individuals with respiratory ailments, including asthma and allergies, to exercise caution during this period of severe air pollution. These individuals are particularly vulnerable to the harmful effects of smog and may experience exacerbated symptoms.
